Piedimonte Etneo (CT)
The project focuses on the conversion of the antique Grassi-Voces family mansion into a luxury hotel and the outbuildings and estate into a garden and park filled with the essence of the Mediterranean landscape. The project begins by removing the superfluous additions from the house which will be converted to hospitality and service spaces. The upper floor, previously the Grassi-Voces family residence, hosts the exclusive suites of the hotel, while the cellars will house the kitchen area and the related rooms. The area where wine was made will become a bar and lounge; with the majestic ancient wine press giving value to this space. There will be an extension of three two storey blocks connecting to the main house but without being in competition with the original either chronologically or structurally. Each volume is rotated away from the others and follows the contours of the landscape, they are further enclosed by two other structures of different heights: one located farther east, which extends in a northerly direction housing the conference hall while the other provides the location for the wellness centre and is lower lying extending in a southerly direction. This project aims to make the most of the views over the landscape: Etna on the north-west side and the Ionian Sea on the south-east.
