Design of a Road and Cycle-Pedestrian Bridge in Santa Venerina

The new bridge over the Fago is conceived not simply as a piece of connecting infrastructure, but as a new urban and landscape landmark, linking the historic centre of Santa Venerina with the new gardens, parking areas and sports facilities. The project takes on the character of a true gateway to the surrounding landscape, conceived as a bridge-garden in which vehicular traffic, cycle and pedestrian routes, areas for rest and opportunities for observing the landscape coexist within a single architectural structure. The continuity of the routes softens the perception of the crossing itself, transforming the bridge into a natural extension of the public realm. The simple, essential structure consists of a weathering steel box girder, a material selected for its durability, recyclability and its ability to blend chromatically with the natural surroundings. The upper profile of the bridge traces a clear line across the landscape, directing the eye towards the horizon and Mount Etna, while its lower edge frames views towards the riverbed. The bridge thus becomes a frame projecting from the town towards the countryside, integrating crossing, rest and contemplation within a single architectural element while minimising its impact on both the urban fabric and the natural environment. The cycle and pedestrian routes become genuine terraces overlooking the regenerated landscape of the riverbed, providing protected spaces for movement as well as places to pause and enjoy the surroundings. To preserve the natural flow of water and avoid interference with the riverbed, the design eliminates the need for intermediate piers. The bridge is therefore conceived as a single-span structure of approximately 40 metres, combining structural requirements, safety and landscape quality.
